A body of work that reflects on the past year, by creating paintings from my camera roll. Each painting is made in the same aspect ratio of my IPhone.
There is some resistance for me to look back on this past year. It has flown by whilst simultaneously feeling like slo-mo. I began 2020 in transition. Newly separated, I consolidated my home and studio in a neighboring coastal town, in a new state, Rhode Island. In March the pandemic hit. Much of the year feels like a blur and the only real documentation of that time is my cameral roll.
March 2021, I found myself in a creative funk. I decided to get back to basics working with the three primary colors as my palette. I mixed a full spectrum of colors, took some panels I had lying around and began to make a few paintings from my cameral roll. Primarily as an exercise in color mixing and direct application of paint with a palette knife. These panels happened to be the same aspect ratio as my IPhone. Hmmmm? the idea to make a body of work was born - document the contents of my iphone, as a vehicle for personal reflection on this period of transition during a global pandemic. I hope to paint a minimum of 365 paintings representing each day in that year. These paintings will be exhibited all together as a body of work.
