Spring Into Summer Exhibition
Dan Welden
We are extremely honored to show Dan Welden’s work in May. A long time friend and colleague, I think of Dan as a maverick and a renaissance man. He is the original pioneer of the solarplate print process, an alternative to traditional printmaking. Since 1970, Dan has been in the forefront of ‘health and safety’ in the arts. As Co-author of Printmaking in the Sun, and director of Hampton Editions ltd., his 50+ years of collaboration include such artists as Willem de Kooning, Eric Fischl, Kiki Smith, and Dan Flavin. He has travelled the world through residences and to give workshops in such places as China, Europe, Peru, New Zealand, Australia and many more! With 91 solo shows under his belt, including a paramount exhibition at the Cape Cod Museum of Art, and in 53 countries, he was awarded a lifetime achievement award from A/E Foundation in New York. His just release documentary Lasting Impressions is about the life and work of this globe-hopping artist that explores the question ‘why do we make art?’ We are hoping to show the documentary at some point this month and maybe we can entice Dan to teach a workshop give an artist talk! |
About Dan's work
The Pandemic put a temporary pause on Dan's hectic travel schedule leaving him with an abundance of time at home that could be spent in the studio. This proved to be an exceptionally creative time for Dan producing work both monumental and intimate. These mixed media paintings were recently exhibited at the Cotuit Center of the Arts on Cape Cod. We are honored to show a selection of Dan’s smaller paintings from this series.
Dan is an experimenter, explorer and a seeker of beauty. When he sets out to work, there is no image in mind, but the vision unfolds as the work evolves. It usually begins with simple forms and marks with broad areas. It then becomes more refined and delicate and knits itself together through line.
A process person, interested in employing materials and techniques to the ‘landscape’ of his mind. Dan continues familiar themes in this new work that evolve from the idea of linear pathways echoing from the tracks of animals in nature, fissures in rock palisades and the patterns created by his hands becoming ‘playful’ with his tools.

“ It is through a sense of ‘awareness’ that I experience my art. When I create with various marks, the colors and forms become kindred to me much like an orchestra conductor hearing the energy of music. My act of creating a symphonic painting resonates when there is no ego separating that birth of pure energy.”
