Dan Welden - Works On View
Dan Welden
In his own words
When I begin to make marks, I am not sure where I'm going, the works develop on their own with the images forming as color comes into play. Brushstrokes, calligraphic marks, scrapes and obliterations are my telltale DNA. I sometimes put myself in an animal mindset, without worldly concerns. Allowing my intuition and passion to my guide me, the present moment is all that matters. As an experimental artist there are always questions and quandries, the adventure of the unknown is my challenge. Specific intent is given to the vision of a rural hillside, where for generations animals trampled the grass and ever so slightly altered its character to subtle patterns. Images sometimes deal with my feelings for landscae terrains and the linear connections between locations, at times a metaphor typing people and relationships together. About Dan Dan is the original pioneer of the solarplate print process, an alternative to traditional printmaking. Since 1970, Dan has been in the forefront of ‘health and safety’ in the arts. As Co-author of Printmaking in the Sun, and director of Hampton Editions ltd., his 50+ years of collaboration include such artists as Willem de Kooning, Eric Fischl, Kiki Smith, and Dan Flavin. He has travelled the world through residences and to give workshops in such places as China, Europe, Peru, New Zealand, Australia and many more. He has 91 solo shows under his belt, in 53 countries. Recent awards include a lifetime achievement award from A/E Foundation in New York; Professor Emeritus from the Escuela de Bellas Artes in Cuzco, Peru and a 2020 Pollock/Krasner Grant propelling his artistic talents and refueling his painting career. In April of 2023, the documentary Lasting Impressions was released which documents the life and work of this globe-hopping artist and explores the question ‘why do we make art?’ In collaboration with the United Theater we will be showing the documentary followed by an artist talk on Sunday August 20 4-6pm |
