Margit Burmeister - Works on View

Margit BurmesterIn Her Own Words The past has informed my creative path as a painter. As a child I spent hours in the wood shop with my father, sawing and building. Later working in early days as a graphic designer, I used my hands cutting, pasting, and creating print works for clients. Graphic design has influenced my painting; grids and typography are good friends. Paintings are usually orderly and balanced, but not quite. In the past year I felt a physical pull to create paintings using wood. I chose wood as a medium because of its vulnerable surface and textural qualities. I source my wood here in New England. The wood is reclaimed, recycled and of another life. Like a layered painting, the wood has history. My assembled paintings are non-objective and convey a respect for the past through the materials. I incorporate typography and found materials in my work. I’m currently intrigued with advertising graphics and type from the 1940s. Using letters or words is not always meant as concept, but to encourage the viewer to go inside the work and explore the many details. About Margit Margit earned a BFA from Syracuse University. After living most of her life as a New Yorker, she now lives and works on the beautiful south coast of Rhode Island. A lifelong artist Margit has been painting full time since 2020. Margit has exhibited at art centers throughout the state and region. In 2022 she was a finalist in the prestigious Art2Life International Juried Exhibition. Amongst many influences, she credits the mentorship of Jane Davies and Nicholas Wilton especially. |
