Michael Fanelli

In his own words
One could easily mistake Michael Fanelli's photographs for paintings. But they are carefully composed observations that capture the reflections of sunlight on the surface of a small Connecticut stream. Anchoring his camera on a tripod a few inches to several feet from his subject, Michael skillfully employs exposure settings to record the delicate play of light on the water's surface. The resulting traces of line bear a striking resemblance to calligraphic marks, evoking the hand of an artist. They provide a vivid visualization of the water's graceful topography and dynamic energy. The depth of the stream influences the mood and atmosphere as the interplay of colors shift from warm ochres to cool darks. The results are unexpected and poetic abstractions.

About Michael
Michael Fanelli is a photographer and graphic designer based in Clinton, Connecticut. His work in photography began with film, particularly using medium and large format cameras both in the field and the studio. Although he now uses digital equipment, the process remains largely the same: to render an image intentionally, using the language of traditional photography, even when pursuing experimental imagery. Celebrating what can be seen with a camera that at times may not be viewable to the eye under normal circumstances.

Michael is a member of the arts group Gallery One CT. He exhibits his work in galleries throughout New England and was selected to show work in the Nor’easter exhibition at the New Britain Museum of American Art.

He is also co-owner with Annie Wildey, a painter and printmaker, of AiR Studio Gallery located in Westerly, RI
