One Perspective
This is a collection of resources, that I have found over the year to be useful for managing a career as an artist.
This list hasn't been updated since 2016. But many resurces are still applicable. I will be reviewing and adding to this list in the Fall.
The information on this page is by no means comprehensive, or necessarily useful to everyone. It is merely a collection of info and resources that I have found along the way, on my own journey as an artist. For the most part we are on the path alone, working in our studios, doing our own research and I'd like to share what I have found useful or inspiring.
One size doesn't fit all - there are many art markets and it is up to us to decide what we want our career to look like.
We define what success is. Is it making a living from art, Is it peer recognition, Is it leaving a mark on the world, Is it purely personal pleasure and enjoyment . Deciding this will help identify short term and long term goals. Also decide what support structure or community you need and then go create it ;)
Below are a couple of articles and graphics that I found interesting Finding Balance and the Circle of Success. In addition here is a link to Career Goals Worksheet from Alix Soan, that can help you set some serious career goals by answering 13 questions which are designed to help you get thinking, and writing, about your work and goals. Followed by an ongoing list of resources that you might find useful. Please feel free to share any resources that you find useful with me and I'll add them to the list ! Email Me

Finding BalanceThis is a useful article from Red Dot Blog. Here is an excerpt on finding balance by identifying your motivations...
...For most artists, motivation lies in a combination of these three factors (Artistic Excellence, Recognition, Monetary Gain/Financial Stability). It is important though, to understand your personal motivation priorities. If artistic excellence is the overriding priority, you may sacrifice your marketing and business time to find more time to devote to your work. If recognition is the priority, museum shows and juried competitions will take precedence over gallery representation or shows. If sales are the priority, production and gallery representation become far more critical. read he full article here |
The Circle of Success I came across this graphic via Alyson Stanfield Art Biz coach. She created this pie chart called a circle of success for artists to replace the standard ladder of success. She states "Rather than the metaphor of steps or ladders, I’ve adopted the circle to explain how I think art businesses and careers expand. I believe that at any one point in your art business, most of your energy is focused in one of the areas identified in this circle.
You bounce back and forth inside the circle as your focus changes, depending on your goals and obligations. You might remain in one focus area for three months or three days. Then you return to it later because you don’t have one exhibition or one planning session and call it good. You do many of the same things month after month and year after year to build your business. As your business expands your circle expands". |
List of Resources
This is by no means a comprehensive list of resources, just resources I have accesses, felt were useful and or continue use. I wanted to be able to refer back to them quickly and thought other artists might appreciate that too. Hope you do.
