The Art of the Crawl
First Friday Arts Crawl, Westerly – Friday April 5, 2024, from 5-8pm
There is always something exciting to see at Westerly’s First Fridays Arts Crawl. Online maps and yellow ‘art stop’ signs at participating venues help visitors navigate the crawl. This month we welcome The Tapped Apple to the art crawl, showing Bryn Sousa, selected for their simple beauty, located at 37 High Street, located at 37 High Street.
At the historic train station the Artists cooperative gallery opens their '29th Regional Art Exhibition', juried by Ben Anderson, Department Head & Associate Professor of 3-D Art and Sculpture at the University of Rhode Island. Just behind the train station at 32 Friendship Street, in studio H is mixed media artist Denny Caruso, who's bold, colorful painting excite the eye.
Over at AiR Studio Gallery, at 19b Railroad Avenue, the exhibition ‘Rivers, Tides & Vessels’ includes timeless and functional ceramic vessels by Ahmee Ceramics, showcased alongside photographs and paintings by artists and owners Michael Fanelli and Annie Wildey. Annie will also be painting onsite.
Just around the corner on Canal Street, at Westerly Camera & Darkroom, you'll find ‘Snapshots from Norway’ photographs by local artist Elizabeth Ellenwood which documents daily life living abroad. Next door at The United Theatre you can attend a reception for the opening of the Westerly High School's Senoirs exhibition and view their 'The Faces of Westerly' a permenant exhibition by photographer Josh Behan.
Next stop head down to 37 High street to view art at The Tapped Apple. before moving on along to 47 High Street, and the artist studios of Kevin Gilmore and Antonio Forte, at studio 208 and Cristina Querrer in studio 211. While you are there drop into the Living Shark Museum in studio 202, to catch their Jaws Anniversary Exhibition, featured in Hey Rhody as a “must-do” for Jaws fans!
Continue down to 12 Broad Street at Red Couch Studio where George Baptista, Susan Cole Stone, Jennifer Pescatello, Susanne Badgett, Scott Gordley, share their latest creations.
Just across the Pawcatuck River at 1 Broad Street is the Owl and Dove, a new restaurant and bar that will be showcasing art by local artist and printmaker Donna Frustere.
In the Hoxie Gallery at The Westerly Library and Wilcox Park, is the exhibition "We are All Different" - Artists of The Orlean Center. The Library closes at 6pm on Friday, but you can see the show this month during regular open hours.
Last but not least ‘A Decade of Art & Love' photographs by Catherine Taylor. are on view at The Granite Theater, 1 Granite Street.
Visitors should also keep their eyes open for the fabulous murals on some of Westerly’s downtown buildings. Pop into several of the small business along the way. If that works up an appetite, end the night at one of Westerly’s many restaurants.
