#atouchofkind Project

,Today, I came across a post at @Elisemorrispaint. Ellie had been invited to join the #atouchofkind project initiated by @featherandwild. To join you would offer to pay something forward and invite your followers to do the same. I've always wanted one of Elise Morris's paintings, and love the idea.  So I jumped on the project with my Acadia Rocks art print.  Want to join me in a @touchofkind project too, and receive my art print?  Here's what you have to do ....

Hop on over to my instagram post add a comment, letting me know what gift you have to pay it forward, and tag a friend (your gift doesn’t have to be art by the way).  Then on Friday March 16, I’ll pick one of you to receive my print.  In exchange, you promise to pay it forward.

Let's spread some kindness!

Celebrating Creative Women at The Velvet Mill

On International Women's Day, I want to give a shout out to all of the women at Velvet Mill!  The Velvet Mill has been home to my studio since moving to Mystic CT 7 years ago. It's a community of artists, small businesses and entrepreneurs. Since being at the mill, many tenants have come and gone and now I'm one of the old timers ;-).  I created our tenant website thevelvetmill.com, a few years back, so that we would have a presence on the web and visitors could find information on our growing community.  It was only today Intl Women's Day, that I realized women probably make up the majority of the tenants with over 45 women artists and small business. This photo highlights just a few great women. Visit our wider community online or in person at thevelvetmill.com.

Art collecting and Haystack School of Crafts

I was going through my flat files in the studio and I came across this print portfolio that I love !.  It's a collection of prints that we made during Dan Welden's printmaking workshop up at Haystack School of Crafts, Deer Isle, Maine. back in 2014.

It was a wonderful group of students and we bonded well. So much so that at the end of the week we all decided to participate in a  print portfolio including Dan and myself. We each editioned 11 of our best prints for the portfolio and one of the student was a book binder, so she generously agreed to make portfolio to hod the prints. Such a lovely memento of our week, and a great wat to collect art!

Bring the beauty of land and sea into your home, with my studio print collection!

I'm excited to share this collection of new prints with you. Whether you are looking for a small accent print for a nook,  or a large statement piece above the fireplace, I have a variety sizes and images available.

Paintings hold memories for me, and when I look back through my archives each one unlocks those memories! I am reminded of my first big snow storm in Orient with First Snow. I thought I was well prepared, but find out for yourself below!
Picture
First Snow
10x10,
limited edition 100,
$100

I was the new artist in residency at the William Steeple Davis House, in Orient LI.  and excited for my first winter outside of NYC. By all accounts we were gonna get hit hard. I made sure I had supplies for the big storm, and located the snow shovel in the shed. I was all set, or so I thought!

The wind howled, and the house rattled all night. It was exciting but also a little unnerving, I was home alone in this sweet  but drafty 1800's cottage.

I woke with bright sunshine streaming through the windows, a crisp brilliant blue sky, a blanket of clean white snow on the ground, and POWER. It was gorgeous!.

Until I looked out of the kitchen door window over to the shed, and saw the 5 ft wide 26 inches deep snow drift between me and the snow shovel, uh oh!.

Luckily my Macgyver skills kicked in, and I dug myself out with a dustpan and brush! So much for advanced preparation!

Fog at Gardniers Bay
10x10,
limited edition 100,
$100

Where the wetlands meet the beach and the Peconic Bay. Moving from NYC to Orient, I became so aware of nature and the cycle of the seasons. Early morning fog always made for a peaceful quite and calm start to the day.

I would rise and walk a couple hundred yards to the country store to get coffee, an egg sandwich and have a chat with the old giffers. My nickname for the men /retirees who would gather early mornings at the back of the store and put the world to rights.

They seemed cautious about this female British artist on their turf, but caution quickly turned to curiosity, which turned to a mutual fond affection! It was a nice way to connect with the community as almost everyone in the village popped into the country store! fond memories of a special place.

In Good Company

Picture

As an artist, I can easily spend hours on end alone in the studio! While I enjoy my own company ;-), having a community is also important. I’m fortunate that my studio is in a repurposed velvet manufacturing mill. So on the other side of my studio door is a growing community of artists and small businesses. I can catch up with artist Laura Gaffke over a coffee at Zest, or take a yoga class at The Open Space, without having to leave the building!

While my local community is growing, I also try to stay connected to the creative community I became part of in graduate school, at the New York Academy of Art (NYAA).  Apart from being located in NYC!, the School has a great MFA program, growing Continuing Ed department, and a wonderful, active and supportive alumni community, which I am grateful to be part of.

I'll be heading back to school! next month to see the 2016 MFA thesis show and meet new Alumni :-)  Show opens May 17 and is always worth the trip.

Also next month, I'm excited to have these two paintings above, exhibited alongside the work of 21 other artists affiliated with the Academy. I feel honored to be in the company of such talented, artists and professors.

This special NYAA exhibition will be at The Vendue Hotel in Charleston, NC. and is co-curated by Rick Davidman and Robert Lange Studios. Show Opens May 26. You can read more about the exhibition  and the artists in this article in American Art Collector.  or visit their websites below:

Don't Be Fooled

Happy April Fools' Day
Now I don't usually send e-blasts back to back, but I couldn't let April Fools' day pass without a mention, as it has special meaning for me. I also hope you'll take advantage of my little April Fools' Day offer below, of free shipping on my spring notecard collection, today only!
Picture
April Fools' Day and Me
April Fools' Day, a day for pranking and playing practical jokes on those considered to be fools if they fall for them, has surprisingly become a day of some significance in my life. Here's why, rewind some 30 odd years...
April fools day was always a fun day, growing up in the UK. You paid a little more attention to things to anticipate and avoid being pranked, especially at high school. That said almost every year without fail our art teacher would manage to out smart and out prank us in some quite monumental and elaborate ways, often planned over months!. One in particular took advantage of my excitement and insecurity. At 17, I was high on life after being accepted into art school, until I received a rather formal letter one morning from the art school, with instructions for an essay and self-directed project for all incoming students. It was loaded with art speak gobbledy gook, my heart stopped and my excitement turned to fear and dread. That morning I arrived at school early and marched into the art room in a panic waving the letter, desperate for some help. Mr Welsh, arms folded with a smirk on his face, didn’t leave me in my misery too long. I’d been had, well and truly! Fast forward 5 years...

...Age 24, young and carefree, I arrived in the US on April's Fools Day 1989, and was relieved to find my BFF from High school, waiting for me at New York's JFK airport.  I think both of us were quietly suspecting we'd been pranked and we're relieved to see each other at the airport!.  Fast forward quite a few more years...

...After working in a career with the British Government in New York City for 18 years, I left to start a new career in the Arts. It turned out my last day of employment was March 31st, and the first day of my new chapter was April 1st, 2006. September of that year, I began an MFA program at the New York Academy of Art. Fast forward a few more years...

...on April 1st, 2012, I married my husband at Dubois Beach in Stonington, CT. and settled into our new life in our home in Mystic, and my studio at the Velvet Mill in Stonginton CT.

So fool or not, April 1st marks some meaningful moments and anniversaries in my life, for sure!.

Happy April Fools' Day to you  ;-)

Making Waves

Making Waves
Making a painting is a very intimate personal experience. It's a journey of trials, error, doubts, fresh starts, new terriroty, surprises, hopefully successes and  finally, completion.

The point at which you stand back and think... Hmmm, well I'm not sure there is much more I can add, without the risk of taking it into the' over worked' zone.  The painting may feel finished, but it still hangs on the studio wall,  framed by the patches of built up paint from this and previous works in progress, where  brushes have been wiped clean, or excess paint removed.  There is still a feeling of deep connection to the journey and the stages of creation. The attachment is strong.
Picture

It is only when I see my paintings out of the studio and in a gallery or a home, that I can really see the finished piece. This new context creates a distance which allows me the opportunity to see more  of the painting's strengths and beauty, and only a glimpse of the mistakes or struggles of the journey.

It's a lovely  bonus on those occassions when I get to deliver the piece to a client's home myself, and share their excitement of seeing the painting in it's new home. I got the chance to do this last month with 'Surf in Snow'. Here it is in it's new spot.

Keep Calm And Dream On

Keep Calm and Dream On

I found the perfect pillow for 2016!

I found this little pillow while I was mooching around one of my favorite towns, Greenport, Long Island. I couldn't resist it, so it came home with me. It's the perfect reminder in and out of the studio!

It's so easy to get a little stressed in life and in the studio, and while a wee bit of stress can be good when you are working to a deadline,  it's also essential to have a sense of calm. Calm allows room for curiosity and play, and ultimately a little bit of magic to happen! And of course we all have to dream a little to manifest our goals and desires.  This past year has been a wonderful year in many ways, and I am grateful for the support and encouragement I have had from all of you. A big heartfelt thank you!

I hope the coming year brings you many moments of calm, and time to dream so that you can manifest a little magic for yourselves x

Peace, Health and Happiness
Annie
